Why Would Demons Announce Who Jesus Is?

In Mark 1:21-28, Jesus encounters a demon-possessed man at the synagogue in Capernaum.  There are many people around to witness what occurs.  The demon says out loud: “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth?  Have You come to destroy us?  I know who You are – the Holy One of God!”

I find this interesting.  I would think that announcing this would be a fairly strong witness to who Jesus is, and would be helpful to Jesus.  Wouldn’t it have been better for the demon to lie about who Jesus is, or to not say anything at all?

So why do you think the demon was so forthright about Jesus being the “Holy One of God”?  Why did he announce it and bear witness to who Jesus is?  The commentary I’m reading on Mark didn’t say anything about that, and I can’t really think of a good reason the demon would have done that.  Do you have any thoughts?

  1. Many people believe that there is power in knowing someone’s name– I think that when the demons did this it was their way of trying to exert power over him. “We know who you are!!” I’ll see if I can find anything about this online!
