I was reading Matthew 23 today, and came across verse 9 which says “And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.” This is in the middle of Jesus explaining to the crowds and his disciples that they shouldn’t be called rabbi or instructors. To me, verse 9 seems out of place.
This isn’t the first time I’ve read about Jesus saying interesting things about our earthly fathers (like Matthew 10:35). Also, one of the commandments is to “honor your father and mother”. How are you supposed to be able to do this commandment if I cannot call any man my father?
How are we to make sense of this verse?
